Theory about the corpse Varric is standing over:
It is in fact: no one. That we know, at least. Guys, it was just a random body. However, I did think it was significant that they showed Varric in the way that they did, and especially what was said before his appearance:
“None shall be untouched by the fires above.”
Everyone, whether mage or templar or neutral, is or will be affected by this war. This perfectly relates to Varric’s character, because throughout all of DA2, he is a voice of neutrality, the middle way, neither nor. He’s a friend to all of the party members, no matter how they choose to align themselves.
Merrill: How do you do it, living in the city without picking a side? Doesn’t it matter to you?
Varric: Of course it does. That’s why I don’t take sides.
Merrill: That doesn’t make any sense.
Varric: I’ve got you and Aveline, Fenris and Anders. Hawke. Isabela.
Varric: I’ve got friends in the Circle and drinking buddies in the Templars. All of them matter.
And at the end:
Varric: I think I’m sick of mages and Templars.
Through Varric, they’re showing the “human” faces of all involved and the reality of pain and death this conflict has caused and the loss of life. Mage or Templar, he doesn’t care. They all matter.
